IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT

The saying “you’re only as strong as your weakest link” was never more important than in the construction business.  The chain of those involved with a construction project starts with the owner and includes the architect, engineers, suppliers, subcontractors…too many to list.  It is the responsibility of the general contractor to maintain the integrity of the chain through planning, listening, empowering, enacting, documenting, accounting, communicating and following up on everything.

Concrete and framing design, submittals, fabrication and delivery are critical to a successful start of a project.  These and similar activities get the attention of the construction team because they are big links in the chain.  Everybody loves to watch a concrete pour or structural steel being hoisted into place.  There is a sense of accomplishment and it seems the project is good as done at this point, but generally this is not where a project fails.

We have seen large projects literally torpedoed at the end of construction by problems with smaller links like custom door hardware, tile and windows.  Nine out of ten problems or weak links like this can be avoided by the general contractor doing what he is responsible for and keeping the chain or team engaged from selecting material, verifying lead time, following up on order status to installation.  It takes the whole team to successfully complete a project; nobody wants to be a weak link.
